An X-citing story of ‘reading recovery’ as actor Gillian Anderson visits school

Youngsters at a Barnsbury primary school got the chance to show off their reading skills to X-Files star Gillian Anderson.

The actor, who is best known for playing Agent Scully in the sci-fi series, heard William Tyndale pupils Liam and Florence read passages from the The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse and Owl Babies

It was all part of the Read Aloud campaign organised by the UCL Institute of Education’s International Literacy Centre as part of a Reading Recovery scheme, to help children with literacy difficulties catch up with their peers.

Reading Recovery Champion Ms Anderson, who recently starred in The Fall, said: “Reading brings the world closer and creates opportunities but it is not an easy skill for every child. I am pleased to support Read Aloud. We all have a responsibility to ensure that all children are able to read well.”

Other celebrities to lend their support to the campaign include footballer Gareth Bale, actor Tony Robinson, illustrator Quentin Blake and popstars Little Mix.

Director of the programme, Julia Douëtil, said: “It means so much to children to be able to read confidently. Reading Recovery children have overcome such great difficulties to be able to do what they are doing today.”
