Gillian Anderson and Bryan Fuller, reunited again!
Starz announced Friday that Gillian Anderson has joined the ensemble cast of Fuller and Michael Green’s forthcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel, American Gods.
Anderson will play Media, one of — if not the — most visible
faces of the New Gods, a group of contemporary deities who go
head-to-head with the immigrant old gods (led by Ian McShane’s
mysterious Mr. Wednesday) for control of the American heartland. Media
thrives off the currency of human attention, growing stronger from the
country’s increasing worship of screens, phones, and laptops. She often
takes the form of public figures and celebrities (perhaps most memorably
in the book, as a perverse Lucille Ball).
The fan-favorite actress joins an already-stacked cast that includes
Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon, the ex-con who gets caught in the middle
of the war of gods; McShane as ringleader Mr. Wednesday; Emily Browning
as Laura Moon, Shadow’s, um, spiritual wife; Bruce Langley as
the Technical Boy, another New God; Yetide Badaki as the sex-hungry
Bilquis; Peter Stormare as the fearsome old god Czernobog; Jonathan
Tucker as prison inmate Low Key Lyesmith (say his first name three times
fast); Cloris Leachman as Zorya Vechernyaya; Crispin Glover as Mr.
World; and Pablo Schreiber as the pugnacious leprechaun, Mad Sweeney.
American Gods is expected to premiere on Starz in 2017. Fuller and Green are writers and showrunners; David Slade is directing the pilot.
