Series creator Chris Carter spoke to The Hollywood Reporter to set a few things straight about the series, including the notion that the new series is a reboot. Short answer: It is absolutely not a reboot.
“I can tell you the idea of a reboot wasn’t the way I
wanted to go. I didn’t want to come back to do a victory lap, to do
sequels or anything like that. I wanted fresh, new material and that’s
what we’ve done.”
Carter also discussed how hard it was to cram all the stories he
wanted to do into a mere six episodes, but indicated that it was
entirely possible that there could be more in the future depending on
“the actors and their schedules.” And because Gillian Anderson and David
Duchovny were very much on board with wanting to do a new series when
the revival was announced, there is a reason to believe.
