The pair joined On Air with Ryan Seacrest Wednesday morning to express their genuine surprise when they were asked to return on set for a six-episode reunion.
When asked if they thought the show would ever return to TV, Anderson
answered, "No, not in this format. We always thought and hoped, I
guess, that there would be one more film ... I don't know why we always
had maybe three in our heads. After the second [film], that wasn't
necessarily the right way for us to conclude things."
Duchovny said the reunion was made possible due to the TV network's call for shorter seasons.
"It was just the changing nature of television," he explained. "You
know, going over to cable and the shortened seasons that made it
feasible for us to come back and do a shorter season like this because
we're too damn old and tired."
