The Post-Modern Prometheus Kiss Scene: A Fandom Myth or The Mandela Effect? 'It could be shown one day,' Spotnitz says

Years has passed and one mystery still remains: Was there an alternative ending scene from the Post-Modern Prometheus? Did Mulder and Scully really kiss during the dance scene? Was it unscripted? Well... some people have been persistent by simply claiming - yes. One of them is non other than The X-Files former producer Frank Spotnitz.

The producer involved himself during a brief Twitter conversation started by a user who mentioned the famous dancing scene. "There was indeed a kiss in one take. It could be shown one day, if Fox still has the original negative somewhere!", Spotnitz replied, adding that "there is a kiss for PMP that isn’t a manip".

Now, first things first: there are two similar ending scenes of the iconic episode. The final one was shown to the audience, and the second was a part of a TV special/video collector editions where Mulder spins Scully before the dance.

In addition, several gifs appeared online eight years ago, showing the rumored kiss between Mulder and Scully. Based on the explanation provided by Fanlore, an analysis reveals that the focal image can be discredited as a real animation, considering how some strange shadow alterations were made, and therefore not fitting the gif at all. However, not everyone agrees with this analysis.

Even though people have been claiming how they witnessed the scene on air, online or whatsoever, there is no real evidence of the footage.

As we all know, this is not the first time that Spotnitz mentions the scene. By giving an answer about the same topic some years ago, he replied to a fan on his website in a similar manner: "The kiss was not scripted, but David and Gillian wanted to do a take with a kiss, so it was filmed. I honestly don’t know whether 20th Television has saved all the unused footage from the television series."

The things have become even more interesting if we consider this could be a case commonly known as the Mandela Effect (also a topic on S11 E04). If this is an example of a false memory shared by a group of fans, then this brings the possibility that Spotnitz who was involved in the production has a false memory about the scene, as well. Additionally, the previously mentioned website states: "Carter had repeated several times, that he never wants to get Mulder and Scully romantically involved, but yet enjoyed teasing the audience with close near-miss encounters like the Hallway scene in the first X-Files feature film." On the other hand, a Blu-ray edition features an alternate Hallway scene of Mulder and Scully actually kissing.

Yes, but actually... No.
