Gillian Anderson has revealed that Sony withdrew from a U.S. distribution agreement for The Salt Path after controversy emerged surrounding the memoir on which the film is based.

The film stars Anderson alongside Jason Isaacs and is based on the bestselling memoir by Ray and Moth Winn, which was presented as a true story about a couple who lose their home and embark on a life-changing journey along England's south coast.

Last year, however, The Observer published allegations questioning key aspects of the couple's account, including details surrounding the loss of their home and Moth's medical diagnosis. The authors disputed those claims.

Reflecting on the controversy, Anderson described the experience as deeply disappointing. “It was really disappointing, a huge letdown,” she said, explaining that the allegations surfaced just as the film was securing U.S. distribution. “The story came out the week we were signing U.S. distribution and Sony withdrew.”

The actress admitted that the situation felt personal because the cast and filmmakers had spent time with the memoir's authors during production. “It felt like such a betrayal because we'd spent time with them,” Anderson said.

Despite the setback, the film is still set for a North American release through Rialto Distribution International, which has praised the project as a story about love, endurance, and the possibility of starting over.
