Marking the 30th anniversary of her first appearance on The X-Files, Laurie Holden revealed that she nearly skipped the audition for Marita Covarrubias because she believed she wasn't right for the role. “I'm not right for this,” she remembers thinking before unexpectedly landing the part.

Holden also recalled the passionate response from fans, many of whom viewed Marita as a threat to the beloved Mulder-Scully partnership. The message she heard most often was: “Don't you mess with my Scully.” Today, her own view is simple: “It's Mulder and Scully forever!”

She explained that creator Chris Carter wanted Marita to remain mysterious, telling her after her first episode that the character should be “very enigmatic and very cool.” Holden later appreciated how the role evolved to reveal greater vulnerability and complexity.

Asked whether she would return for Ryan Coogler's upcoming Hulu reboot, Holden answered enthusiastically: “Yeah, I would be game. Of course! It's Ryan Coogler.”

Looking back on the show's enduring legacy, she summed up her experience by saying, “I feel like we touched on magic. It's very rare, and it's a gift.”
