Gillian Anderson and Rebecca Hall have been cast in the upcoming psychological thriller The Portrait, which will be written and directed by Sara Colangelo, the filmmaker behind The Kindergarten Teacher and Worth. The film is based on a novel by Italian author Ilaria Bernardini.

Anderson will play Valeria, an internationally acclaimed writer who has spent years involved in a secret relationship with a wealthy businessman named Martín. When his sudden illness makes him inaccessible, Valeria becomes determined to remain close to him.

Her solution is to commission his wife, artist Isla, played by Rebecca Hall, to paint her portrait. The arrangement allows Valeria to enter Martín's family life while concealing her true connection to him, setting the stage for a tense psychological drama built on deception, secrecy, and conflicting loyalties.

Colangelo has said the film continues her exploration of moral ambiguity, female transgression, and the different ways women exercise power. Producers have described the project as a stylish Hitchcockian thriller.

Production is scheduled to begin in the United Kingdom in 2027.
